Sometimes Freedom is a Choice

Bryan Huhn

“How the hell were you able to walk away from the money and job security?”

I was asked this question recently and it’s something I’ve been reflecting on since then. I thought I would share my answer with you today.

Because the crazy thing is…I feel much more secure today than I did with the “safety” of a good job.

I was able to walk away by questioning my beliefs.

Did I need the luxury car?

Nope. A car is a utility. It gets me where I need to go.

Did I need the meals at high end restaurants?

Nope. A burger at the corner bar, with the company of the bartender we know on a first name basis is more fun.

Did I need to attend the big sporting events?

Nope. Watching the game on my couch provides a better view, better food, better drinks, and no bathroom line.

Did I need to take my son out to expensive entertainment venues every weekend?

Nope. Playing cards with him at the kitchen table and truly listening to what life is like for a kid is more enjoyable.

Did I need to keep maxing out my retirement savings?

Nope. In another 20-25 years it will have compounded to a substantial amount.

Did I need all the excess non-retirement savings?

Nope. If I preserve my retirement savings and create a business I won’t want to retire from, I can use those savings to build my ideal life today.

I could go on. But you get the point.

If you want to change your life, I think the best way to do that is to start questioning your beliefs.

We all can live our ideal lives if we put in the effort. My life is certainly better for it.
